Fake It Till You Break It by Jenn P. Nguyen

Thank you again SwoonReads for sending me an ARC!

Mia and Jake have known each other their whole lives. They’ve endured summer vacations, Sunday brunches, even dentist visits together. Their mothers, who are best friends, are convinced that Mia and Jake would be the perfect couple, even though they can’t stand to be in the same room together. After Mia’s mom turns away yet another cute boy, Mia and Jake decide they’ve have had enough. Together, they hatch a plan to get their moms off their backs. Permanently. All they have to do is pretend to date and then stage the worst breakup of all time—and then they’ll be free. The only problem is, maybe Jake and Mia don’t hate each other as much as they once thought…

I had seen this one floating around here and there and I’d heard pretty good things about it! I found out it was an enemies-to-lovers PLUS a fake dating book in one! I love those two tropes and I was really curious to see how they would play out in one book! I decided to send a request to the publisher for an ARC and THEY SENT ME ONE. I’m still blown away haha. Thank you so much SwoonReads!

I think one of my favorite things about this book was how normal it felt. It felt like something that would actually happen to normal teens, in a normal school, in a normal world. And I really appreciated that. It helped me connect to the Mia and what she was going through. It made her seem really human. She was awkward and goofy and sometimes didn’t know what to do with herself. It was awesome.

Despite this, I think a few parts of this fell a little flat for me. I wasn’t fully invested in the plot. Towards the end, things started to feel a little bland and during tense moments, I just wasn’t feeling it. It was really only towards the end, but I definitely noticed it.

I really liked how the enemies-to-lovers trope played out. It was pretty different from the other ways I’ve seen it done, but I thought the development was really smart. I liked how Mia and Jake grew and figured out what they wanted and what they wanted to do. It was really cool to see.

The relationships in this book were a little off to me. I’m pretty sure it’s just how I read the book and my opinion, but I just didn’t fully feel them. Not just the main romantic relationship, but the friendships too. I liked them, I just didn’t find myself fully invested or feeling anything towards them. I wish Mia’s friendship with Aly had gotten more page time, because I feel like that could’ve been really awesome. Though, the friendship between Mia and Jake’s moms was really cute. And the romantic relationship was pretty freaking adorable at times.

I was also a really big fan of the writing. It was really easy to fly through and it was really fun! I was able to be immersed in the story really easily. I definitely want to give her other book a try!

I enjoyed this one. I liked how normal it felt. It was normal teens messing up, doing what they thought they wanted to do then changing their minds, and just figuring things out. I would definitely like to read more books like this one!

Fake It Till You Break It comes out June 18, 2019! You can add it on Goodreads and pre-order a copy in the meantime!
