Series That Went Downhill

Welcome to my series series! I have a couple posts planned out that focus around series, so I thought it would be fun to make it a mouthful of a name! This is part 1 and is all about the series where I loved the first book (or couple) and then I felt like the rest just didn’t live up. I would like to say that part of the reason I disliked later books is probably from a change of taste. I don’t want to take away from the hard work that went into creating these books!

The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Braken

I adored the first book. It’s still up there with my favorites and I even made plans (that never panned out unfortunately) to cosplay Ruby! I did really enjoy Never Fade, but not as much as The Darkest Minds. And then I just found In The Afterlight to be too heavy. I read it a long time ago and don’t remember a whole lot, but I do remember that weird brother plot that I did not like at all. I was also really young when I read this, so maybe if I did a reread I would like it more!

Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas

I haven’t read past Heir of Fire and I actually fell out of this series before everything blew up. I tried to get into Queen of Shadows, but the tone felt completely different to me. And from what I’ve heard, I’m not missing too much. I think there could have been something to this series. It just wasn’t executed to it’s fullest potential.

The Taking series by Melissa West

I’ve read the first two books of this trilogy. I really enjoyed the first one (though I couldn’t really tell you what it’s about), but I found the second to be full of plot holes and events that didn’t make sense. There was this weird mind reader thing going on, but it wasn’t consistent at all. I haven’t read the third book, so it might get better!

Alienated by Melissa Landers

This one hurts a little bit. I adored Alienated with all my heart and tried to ignore my problems with Invaded. But, I just couldn’t bring myself to read United. My biggest problem was with the romance. It started off really positive, but then I found it got really weird and was too big a part of the story. Too much sexual tension at the wrong times.

Angelfall by Susan Ee

WHERE ARE MY FIVE BOOKS!? This trilogy was originally supposed to be five books long, but got cut at the last minute. And it shows. There is so much more to the world and so much more story to be told. The last book did not live up to the other two and I’m still really disappointed.

While I had problems with later books, the ones I did enjoy will always have a place in my heart. It would be interesting to reread some of these to see if my opinions have changed, though I’m not sure if I could ever find the time haha.

Thank you for reading!

  1. I totally agree with you about The Darkest Minds, I personally couldn’t even make it through the last book. I’ll probably only ever find out how the story ends if they make movies out of all three books lol

  2. Totally agree on a lot of these! I also stopped reading the Throne of Glass series after HoF. I had an irl friend who read QoS when it came out & told me about it, but by that point I’d just lost interest. And ahhh I loved Alienated when I read it. I had a feeling the rest of the series wouldn’t live up to the first book so I never continued lmao

  3. I really loved the first two books of throne of glass, really didn’t like book 3 and 4 and then fell in love again with book 5 and 6. This series has been a wild ride so far for me, really curious were book 7 will fall haha

I agree with the angelfall series!
