How I Organize My Shelves

I love seeing people’s shelves no matter how big or small, I always love looking at them. I find it so interesting to see how their organized, which books they have on display, and what kind of books they have! I think I have one of the most complicated, really no reason to it, ways of organizing, so I decided to throw myself a curve ball and try and make myself explain it! I hope this makes some sort of sense! I was going to include full pictures, but the quality got destroyed no matter what I did, so that idea went out the window. I still wanted to do this post, so it’s just going to be more talking and less pictures!

I organize by genre, rating, author, and feel. It’s all very weird since I have my own version of pretty much all of those. It all makes perfect sense to me and I could probably find a book no problem if I needed to, though it’s most likely sound like gibberish to everyone else.

For genre, I like to keep things relatively in the same space. My main genres are, my favorites, kingdom books, contemporary/romance, sci-fi. Kingdom books are fantasy, I just group them together as which books have kingdoms/castles/royalty in them and the ones that don’t. And if I can swing it, each genre has it’s own section of shelf. Although, if I’m not a huge fan of a book, but I don’t dislike it enough to donate it or give it away, I will just shove it on a bottom shelf with a mishmash of everything. It’s quite efficient.

I keep my favorites on the top shelves and work my way down. I don’t know how I came up with that, but it seemed natural to me and I’ve kept at it since then.

Most of the time, I like to keep multiple books by the same author together. If the genres are vastly different, sometimes I’ll separate them, but I’ve found that to be kind of rare.

The biggest decider for me is feel. This is kind of the same thing as my favorites, but not? I put books where it simply feels right. My favorites come first and then work my way down my likeness scale. It’s kinda fun to see what I really thought about books when shelving them, to see what I liked more than other things!

And then recently with my newest shelf, I’ve started putting books on randomly, just by genre. I have sci-fi, fantasy, and contemporary all on one shelf. It feels right, so I’ve left it for now!

I’m really sorry, this was a hot mess. I think it was fun and I always love shelf posts of all kinds, my organization was just off here. This is overall just a little messy, but I”M GOING WITH IT!!! I hope it wasn’t too confusing and you enjoyed it to some extent!

Thank you for reading!

  1. I haven’t heard anyone say they organize by feel before, but that is an interesting way. I have my shelves arranged mostly by colors, and quite a few of them were just picked by what I thought looked right even if they weren’t rainbow, etc. So I totally get it! Great post! 🙂
