I’ve liked books for pretty much my whole life. I haven’t loved them with a passion for my entire life, but I’ve always been reading. Today, I’ve decided to put together a few of the books I loved when I was younger! I’m taking a guess that I was 8-11ish when I read these, so I’m omitting Harry Potter and Percy Jackson since those are obvious choices and read those in my tween years!
The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart
This was the first ‘long’ book I ever read and I remember being so happy when I finished the first chapter. Two old friends and I read this together and we were obsessed. We loved the whole concept of exceptional kids taking tests to get into a place to do amazing things. We fantasized about doing that ourselves even though we agreed we probably weren’t cut out for it.
The Books of Elsewhere by Jacqueline West
Oh, this one made me look at paintings, wishing I could climb inside and explore them. I never got the chance to finish this series, but I did reread the first one multiple times. I loved the concept of going into paintings and it was just creepy enough to pique my interest, but not freak me out.
Gregor the Overlander by Suzanne Collins
Yep, before she wrote The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins wrote a Middle Grade series, though it is very dark and has a lot of blood in it. This one was interesting to me and I’m floored I wasn’t terrified of it. My favorite part would have to have been the prophesies. I memorized all of them and preformed them like little skits!
39 Clues by Rick Riordan
I honestly don’t remember much about this series, but I know this was one of the first ones I woke up early to keep reading for. I actually never got around to finishing the series, but I know I liked it well enough!
Amulet by Kazu Kibuishi
I’ve loved this series practically from the beginning. I’ve followed it into my teen years and I still love it with as much passion as I did when I was younger. The storyline is fantastic and the artwork is heart-eye inducing. This one is a graphic novel and I can’t recommend it enough.
Those were some books I loved when I was younger! I think if I read them now, I would enjoy them just as much as I did the first time and they will always have a special place on my shelf.
Thank you for reading!
39 CLUES!! That first book Rick Riordan wrote was actually what introduced me to Percy Jackson, so I have fond memories of that series. And Gregor the Overlander is super underrated.

I’ve never heard of any of these books before! I’m a trainee primary school teacher so might have to check these out and recommend them to my pupils in the future!
